چکیده

A three-dimensional, Newtonian hydrodynamical technique is used to follow the post-bounce phase of a stellar core collapse event. For realistic initial data we have employed post core-bounce snapshots of the iron core of a 20 M⊙ star from the study of Ott et al. (2004). The models exhibit strong differential rotation, but have centrally condensed density stratifications. We demonstrate for the first time that such post-bounce cores are subject to a so-called low-T/|W | nonaxisymmetric instability and, in particular, can become dynamically unstable to an m = 1 dominated spiral mode at T/|W | ∼ 0.08. We calculate the gravitational wave emission by the instability via the quadrupole formula and find that the emitted waves may be detectable by current and future gravitational wave observatories from anywhere in the Milky Way. Effect of Rotation on the Stability of a Stalled Cylindrical Shock and its Consequences for Core-Collapse Supernovae

A perturbative analysis is used to investigate the effect of rotation on the instability of a steady accretion shock (SASI) in a simple toy-model, in view of better understanding supernova explosions in which the collapsing core contains angular momentum. A cylindrical geometry is chosen for the sake of simplicity. Even when the centrifugal force is very small, rotation can have a strong effect...

Gravitational waves from 3D MHD core collapse simulations

We present the gravitational wave analysis from rotating (model s15g) and nearly non-rotating (model s15h) 3D MHD core collapse supernova simulations at bounce and the first couple of ten milliseconds afterwards. The simulations are launched from 15M⊙ progenitor models stemming from stellar evolution calculations. Gravity is implemented by a spherically symmetric effective general relativistic ...

One-Armed Spiral Waves in Galaxy Simulations with Counter-Rotating Stars One-Armed Spiral Waves in Galaxy Simulations with Counter-Rotating Stars

Motivated by observations of disk galaxies with counter-rotating stars, we have run two-dimensional, collisionless N−body simulations of disk galaxies with significant counter-rotating components. For all our simulations the initial value of Toomre’s stability parameter was Q = 1.1. The percentage of counter-rotating particles ranges from 25% to 50%. A stationary one-arm spiral wave is observed...

3D collapse of rotating stellar iron cores in general relativity including deleptonization and a nuclear equation of state.

We present 2D and 3D simulations of the collapse of rotating stellar iron cores in general relativity employing a nuclear equation of state and an approximate treatment of deleptonization. We compare fully general relativistic and conformally flat evolutions and find that the latter treatment is sufficiently accurate for the core-collapse supernova problem. We focus on gravitational wave (GW) e...

Viscosity & Rotation in Core-collapse Supernovae

We construct models of core-collapse supernovae in one spatial dimension, including rotation, angular momentum transport, and viscous dissipation employing an α-prescription. We compare the evolution of a fiducial 11 M⊙ non-rotating progenitor with its evolution including a wide range of imposed initial rotation profiles (1.25<P0 < 8 s, where P0 is the initial, approximately solid-body, rotatio...
